When Giovanne Schachere lost his mother during the COVID-19 pandemic, his grief carved out a new sense of purpose. The woman who raised him with "raw love and big dreams, even when life got hard" left behind a spirit that would later serve as the soul of Mysti’s Adult and Family SVCS. From that personal loss, Schachere set out to create a support network that has reshaped how social services are delivered throughout California. Serving King, Snohomish, Thurston, Yakima, Lewis, Clark, and Pierce counties, the organization has become a lifeline for individuals and families often left out of traditional systems.

Schachere’s storytelling is grounded in honesty. He doesn’t romanticize his late mother's struggle, nor the ways systems let people down during moments of crisis. Her legacy is about seeing people, truly seeing them, especially when others look away. Mysti’s Adult and Family SVCS was born from that ethos—challenging the cycle of dependency and focusing instead on building strength and self-sufficiency. Where others see difficult cases or hopeless situations, Schachere and his team see human potential ready to be unlocked.

When Housing Comes First, Everything Else Follows

Traditional housing programs often make people prove they're worthy before offering shelter. Mysti’s Adult and Family SVCS flips that narrative by meeting people where they are, with a home as the starting point. Their housing-first philosophy reflects the belief that immediate stability sets the stage for all other progress.

For example, a man released from prison in 2023 arrived at Mysti’s after facing rejection from other programs. Rather than subject him to endless requirements, the staff prioritized helping him settle into a safe space, find work, and begin rebuilding. When he needed surgery, they ensured post-care recovery happened in his own apartment, not a shelter. This act restored his sense of dignity and gave him the foundation to cook meals, heal, and believe in his own future again.

Staff accompany clients beyond move-in day. They teach tenant rights, help manage budgets, and act as bridges between renters and landlords, especially those who accept Section 8 vouchers. The team doesn’t warehouse people; they invest in helping residents thrive, teaching them skills so they can eventually manage on their own terms and pass stability to their children.

Work That Means Something

Getting people employed is a start, but Mysti’s aims higher: work that sustains, dignifies, and uplifts. Schachere talks with pride of people who leave incarceration and within weeks are not only earning but finding real footing in the world. This is “revolution work,” he says, not charity. Women who once lived in shelters now help others as outreach workers, and youth previously in foster care are now business owners in their communities.

The program is structured, rooted in job training, real-world volunteer experience, and constant support. Staff partner with Washington employers committed to giving a fair chance to those with criminal records or unstable housing. The organization documents hours, helps participants enroll in vocational programs, and celebrates every milestone. When someone begins to realize they are more than their past experiences, the impact ripples outward—families feel it, too, and cycles of poverty and disappointment begin to break.

Navigating Systems That Weren't Built for Real People

Navigating public assistance often means wrestling with confusing paperwork and exhausting appointments. Mysti’s doesn’t let clients face that maze alone. Care coordinators sit beside clients at every step, whether it’s tackling SSI applications, securing food stamps, or handling mental health appointments. Their support is hands-on and persistent.

The staff draw heavily on trauma-informed care, recognizing most people at Mysti’s have experienced repeated setbacks. They help with essentials—birth certificates, official identification, and other paperwork overlooked but necessary for jobs or leases. “We don’t just provide services—we ignite revolutions,” Schachere likes to say, but what he means is change happens one obstacle at a time, patiently, with deep respect for each person’s story.

By acting as both guides and advocates, staff make it possible for people to finish what they start. No one is treated as a temporary problem. Each client is seen as part of a larger journey toward regaining independence and, ultimately, pride.

The Long Game: Building Legacies, Not Case Files

Mysti’s Adult and Family SVCS does not measure its success by how many people remain in the program, but by how many people leave—confident, employed, and housed. Client after client has gone from homelessness to homeownership, incarceration to steady work, or from receiving help to becoming a helper themselves.

These are not abstract outcomes. They are lived realities, from adults who start work within a month of release to women making the leap from shelter guest to full-time staff. Schachere, who completed a Master’s degree in Human Services while leading the organization and raising five children, insists everyone is capable of growth—his own included. The true proof of their work is in families who break cycles that once seemed unbreakable.

Legacy is what lives when you’re gone. For me, it’s not wealth—it’s worth,” Schachere reflects. In every story of transformation, Mysti’s Adult and Family SVCS leaves a mark that will last longer than any individual program. As the organization continues to grow, partnering with employers and communities across the Pacific Northwest, it stands as a reminder: when you match honest accountability with care, people don’t just get by—they move forward, stronger and ready to give back.
