On what would have been Nipsey Hussle’s 40th birthday, Los Angeles Metro — in partnership with the Nipsey Hussle estate and family — temporarily renamed a station in his honor as part of its new Metro Culture Series. The series celebrates Angelenos who have shaped the city’s culture, with Nipsey chosen as the first honoree.
The tribute includes limited-edition TAP cards featuring Nipsey’s image, available exclusively at select Metro locations. The move reflects his deep ties to South Los Angeles, where he often rode the 108 bus off Crenshaw and Slauson before rising to international recognition as a Grammy Award-winning artist and entrepreneur. Nipsey was tragically killed in 2019 outside of The Marathon Clothing store near Hyde Park Station, a business he founded to reinvest in his neighborhood.
For Giovanne Schachere, CEO and Founder of Mystis Adult and Family Services, the honor is a powerful reminder of Nipsey’s influence not only on LA culture, but on leaders and communities nationwide.
“As a CEO, father, and advocate, I’ve learned that leadership isn’t a sprint — it’s a marathon,” Schachere said. “That came directly from Nipsey Hussle. His philosophy reshaped how I lead, reminding me to invest in people, build patiently, and create systems that last.”

Schachere’s organization operates across California and Washington State, focusing on justice-involved reentry, housing support, family stabilization, and recuperative care. He says Nipsey’s model of reinvestment and community ownership continues to inspire his team’s mission in regions like Los Angeles and Monterey County.
“Metro’s recognition shows the world what many of us already knew,” Schachere added. “Nipsey was more than a rapper. He was a leader, a visionary, and an example of what it means to build for the long run. His marathon still inspires us to this day.”
As Angelenos line up for commemorative TAP cards and share stories of Nipsey’s legacy, Schachere sees the tribute as a reminder that authentic leadership lives far beyond one industry or city.
“The marathon continues — not just in Los Angeles, but anywhere people choose to lead with vision and dignity.”
