The 7 Principles of Community Impact Leadership: A Free Guide from Giovanne Schachere

After two decades on the frontlines of social services — from South LA group homes to building a multi-state organization serving families facing homelessness — I've distilled everything I've learned into seven core principles that guide how I lead, build, and serve.
These aren't theories from a textbook. They're battle-tested frameworks forged in the real work of community transformation. Whether you're leading a nonprofit, building a program, or trying to make your corner of the world better, these principles will change how you think about impact.
Principle 1: Lead from the Frontline, Not the Corner Office
The most effective leaders in community work aren't the ones with the biggest titles — they're the ones who show up. When I started Mysti's, I wasn't just the CEO. I was the case manager, the driver, the person answering calls at 2 AM. That proximity to the work isn't optional — it's the foundation of credibility.
"You can't design systems for people you've never sat across from." — Giovanne Schachere
Principle 2: Build Systems, Not Just Programs
Programs end. Grants run out. Contracts change. But systems — the infrastructure, processes, and partnerships that outlast any single funding cycle — that's what creates generational change. At Mysti's, we didn't just build housing programs. We built a replicable system that works across two states because it was designed to scale from day one.
"Anyone can start a program. It takes a system designer to build one that outlives you."
Principle 3: Compassion and Accountability Belong Together
Meeting people where they are doesn't mean leaving them there. True compassion holds space AND holds standards. At Mysti's, we walk alongside clients with empathy — but we also set clear expectations, timelines, and milestones. Love without structure is chaos. Structure without love is cruelty. The magic is in the balance.
Principle 4: Tell Your Story Before Someone Else Does
In the age of AI and 24/7 media, narrative is power. I launched The Giovanne Show and this blog not because I wanted attention, but because the stories of people doing this work deserve to be heard. Your silence isn't humility — it's a missed opportunity to inspire someone who needs to see what's possible.
Principle 5: Diversify Your Revenue Like Your Life Depends on It
I've watched too many nonprofits collapse because they depended on a single government contract. At Mysti's, we operate across two states, serve multiple populations, and are building media, speaking, and consulting revenue streams. Not because we're greedy — because we're strategic. A mission that depends on one check is a mission built on sand.
Principle 6: Invest in People Before Infrastructure
I've seen organizations pour money into new offices and fancy software while their staff burns out and turns over. Your people ARE your infrastructure. Calculate your turnover cost — recruitment, training, lost productivity — and compare it to what retention investments would cost. The math almost always favors investing in your team.
"A building can't make a phone call at midnight. Your people can."
Principle 7: Legacy Is Not What You Build — It's What Survives You
I named my company after my mother, Mysti Bluee, whose legacy of service inspired everything I do. As a father of seven — including newborn twins — I think about legacy every single day. Not in the abstract, but in the concrete: What systems am I leaving behind? What leadership am I developing? What values am I encoding into the DNA of this organization?
"The greatest leaders don't build empires. They build ecosystems that thrive long after they step away."
